Thank you for joining me in my studio!
You can find the first video of this series here.
There are so many different ways to make ceramics, and I’m really only studied in a chosen few. This is because the entire ceramic world is huge (think of dental crowns, your bathroom sink and toilet, and even light fixtures - all involve ceramic parts, and that’s not even touching the entire world of creative ceramics).
Within creative ceramics, there are high fired, low fired, porcelain, stoneware, earthenware, terra cotta, Majolica… just to name a few.
This is a process video about three different things:
underglaze
which is applying colour to a bisque fired piece before it gets glazed
wax resist
applying wax to the surface of bisque fired piece so that the waxed part remains unglazed.
glaze
coating the bisque fired piece with a combination of raw materials that melts into a glass like coating on the ceramic piece.
Here I’m touching up a bit of glaze on a pot after having poured glaze into the center of the bowl:
Here are a couple of plates that have been glazed after the waxed resist was applied to a crescent form on the edge of the plate:
The pieces are now firing and next week I will share opening the kiln with you!
